Brown finds success as driver

Former resident Jonathan Brown, officer in charge of Coast Guard Station Cortez in Cortez, Fla., has made the news as a stock car driver.

A recent edition of Coast Guard magazine included a feature story on Brown, the son of Al and Marilyn Brown, who drives a No. 6 Coast Guard car in stock car races at Desoto Super Speedway in Bradenton, Fla.

The former Lampasan won his first race at Desoto in 2005 and won another race in 2006.

Brown painted his No. 6 car - a 1978 Chevy Caprice - to look like a 41-foot utility boat.

The white vehicle has a racing stripe across its nose, a Coast Guard Auxiliary emblem in the middle of the hood, Coast Guard emblems on the sides and a black number six in honor of Mark Martin, Brown's favorite professional stock car racer.

Brown counts his grandson Brenden and his father Al as two of his biggest fans.
