District 25-4A Track Meet scheduled to start Monday

If any of the Lampasas High School track and field athletes have their sights set on advancing to the regional meet, their chance to advance is next week.

The District 25-4A Track Meet, which will be held at Austin Lake Travis High School, will start Monday with field events, 3200 meters finals and running preliminaries. Running finals are scheduled for Wednesday.

The top three finishers in each individual event and top three relay teams advance to the Region IV-4A Meet in San Anonio.

The LHS boys are coming off a solid showing at the prestigious San Angelo Relays, where they finished fourth in their division.

While any number of the LHS boys could put themselves into position to advance to the regional meet with personal-best performances, a couple of individuals and one relay team stand the best chance based on past performances.

Senior high jumper Clay Tyner has been stuck at 6 feet, two inches for more than a month, but a jump of 6-4 could put him into position to advance.

Sophomore Aaron Reyna has shown improvements in the 100 meters and long jump the past three weeks, finishing second and third, respectively, in the two events in San Angelo. Continued improvement at Lake Travis could put him in the hunt.

The 800 relay team of Cory Summers, Aaron Reyna, Tyler Phelan and Angelo Hardy finished third at San Angelo in 1:32.90. If that group can shave a second or two off that time, it could advance.

The LHS girls competed at Burnet last week.

On the girls' side, senior high jumper Jennifer Howard improved four inches at Burnet with a clearing leap of 5-4. A similar performance could put her into position for a regional berth.

From an experience standpoint, senior hurdler Courtney Carpenter has what it takes to advance beyond the district meet. Carpenter, who has been solid this spring despite battling nagging injuries that surfaced during the fall cross country campaign, qualified for the regional meet in the 100 and 300 hurdles last year.
