Club kicks off spring The L-M Garden and Civic Club welcomed spring with a flurry of activities beginning with a regular meeting March 17. Sabrina McKenzie, president, thanked members for their hard work during the Valentine's bouquet sales project. She reminded members to sign up for the Annual Flower Show April 21. Following the business meeting, a workshop on floral design techniques was held in preparation for the upcoming show. The club continued its activities with a plant sale during the Diamondback Jubilee Saturday. Virginia Hamilton, club event chairman, expressed appreciation for all of the plants club members donated and for the time they spent working in the booth. The group thanked Sheri Stone and her sons for helping with booth set-up and hauling tables. Activities continued with an Arbor Day celebration Tuesday at the club building where Mrs. McKenzie welcomed special visitors, including Councilman Kyle Walton and Mayor David Ivey, who read a proclamation designating April 1 as the official Arbor Day for the city of Lometa. Kathryn Butler, event chairman, gave a brief history of Arbor Day in the nation, state and the city, as well as the garden club, followed by a group reading of "Our Nation's Trees," a choral-speaking program written by Jean Conder Soule. Participants planted a Texas mountain laurel donated by Pat McGarry in honor of the late Mike McGarry, former mayor of Lometa. The group was invited inside the club building for refreshments, provided by Arbor Day Committee members Mrs. Butler and Mrs. McGarry. |
