Library features maquettes

Lampasas ISD students toured the library recently to see the sculputure models made by T.J. on exhibit there. The pieces are on loan from John and Mimi Cole.
Patrons at the Lampasas Public Library will see something different next time they visit. Last month, John Cole offered to loan the maquettes -- or models -- for IV Florae for Flora to the library for one year, and the library accepted.

The models were made by sculptor T.J. Mabrey in preparation for the finished sculpture, one of the first in Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden in Campbell Park.

The maquettes are part of Cole's private collection. He and his wife, Mimi, purchased them at auction at the Lampasas Association For the Arts Dinner for the Arts in 2006. Cole is a LAFTA board member.

LAFTA's mission is to expand opportunities for everyone to experience the arts, and Cole's loan to the library fulfills part of that mission.

The maquettes provide the public a glimpse of Mrs. Mabrey's working method. In the process of thinking about and creating the ultimate sculpture group that now stands in the sculpture garden, Mrs. Mabrey made changes and rethought details.

Library director Shanda Subia said she is excited about having the maquettes on view. "We are glad to be able to offer access to art as well as literature. By hosting such pieces, we hope to encourage the appreciation and understanding of art and its place in our community."

Three other sculptures are on display in the garden: Lampasas Furniture, by Carolann Haggard; and Meadow Dancers and Portal to the Springs, both by David Hickman.
