Tyner, Cofield named Academic All-State

PHOTO BY RICHARD AKRIDGE Senior point guard Clay Tyner, shown here in a win against Dripping Springs, helped guide the Badgers to 19 victories this season, the program's best total since 1999. Tyner also excelled in the classroom.
A week after teammate Heath Hopson was selected to the All-Region 4-4A Basketball Team, seniors Clay Tyner and Heath Cofield made sure the honors kept rolling in for the 2007-08 Lampasas High School basketball team.

The seniors were named Academic All-State selections for their work on the court and in the classroom. The duo was also a large part of the reason the Badgers won 19 games, the most wins the program has produced since 1999.

Tyner, a 5'11" point guard, was a First-Team All-District 25-4A selection, averaging 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals per game. Tyner has a handful of offers to play at the next level and is yet to decide where he will attend college.

"Clay had a tremendous effect on the Lampasas program," LHS head coach Scott Harrelson said. "He came here from Washington, D.C, and was able to establish himself as a freshman. His work ethic and drive to succeed helped him become the best point guard in the district. I feel Clay was the reason for our success this season. His drive and enthusiasm led his teammates to new levels."

Heath Cofield
Cofield, a 6'4" post, was a Second-Team All-District 25-4A selection, averaging 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks per game. Cofield's offers to play in college included Ivy League school Brown, but the class valedictorian will study at Texas A&M University.

"Heath is an incredible young man," the coach said. "He is a leader among men. Heath is always doing for others without hesitation. He improved by accepting criticism, working extremely hard on fundamentals and taking a leadership role both on and off the court. Heath will be sorely missed, as he was and always will be a Badger."
