FB official encourages residents to use caution The ingredients for a wildfire disaster in Lampasas County are in place, and Lampasas County Farm Bureau President Barney Groves is urging rural residents to be extra cautious. A wet spring and summer last year contributed to producing a hugh fuel load of brush and grass, Groves said. The fall and winter have been especially dry, and a series of cold fronts have been blowing through. "That, combined with the high winds and low humidity, sets the stage for a potential wildfire disaster." Said Groves: "Add a spark from an outdoor fire, welder or even a catalytic converter from your car on dry grass, and you have a fire that can blaze quickly out of control." He shared some fire safety tips for county residents. • create a defensible space of at least 30 feet around the house and outbuildings. Mow lawns short. • establish fuel breaks along roadways and between buildings. • keep mufflers and spark arresters on agricultural equipment in working order. • watch for sparks when using welding equipment. • avoid driving or parking vehicles in areas where tall, dry grass comes into contact with hot pollution-control equipment under vehicles. • postpone outdoor burning. • when debris burning is allowed, take precautions. Stay with the fire until it is completely out. |
