Mr. Smith

Arthur Paul Smith
Lifelong Oakalla resident Arthur Paul Smith, 73, died March 14, 2008, at Seton Medical Center in Austin.

Graveside services are March 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Smith Cemetery at Oakalla with Pastor Clay Cole officiating.

Family visitation is March 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas.

Mr. Smith was born March 3, 1935, in Oakalla, the son of H.H. "Buck" and Thelma Lockman Smith.

He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1953 and attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

Mr. Smith graduated from the Texas Department of Public Safety Training Academy. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years.

He returned to work after military service at the Department of Public Safety in various departments, including MVI, drivers license, license and weight and communications.

Mr. Smith's affiliation with the DPS took him to many places in Texas, beginning with El Paso and moving to Del Rio. His final move to Lampasas was in 1971, where he finished his career with the DPS and retired to the family ranch in Oakalla where he continued to ranch.

Mr. Smith was instrumental in creating the Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of Oakalla Baptist Church and on the boards of the Oakalla Community Center and Oakalla Library. He was a lifelong member of the NRA.

Survivors include his wife, Laquetta Smith, of Oakalla; a daughter, Genna Terry, and husband Bill, of Lampasas; two sons, Randall Smith, and wife, Christy, and John K. Smith, and wife, Somer, all of Oakalla; seven grandchildren, Justin Terry, Brittany Carl, Jake Terry, Vannon Smith, Callyn Smith, Rawlin Smith and Avery Paul Smith; a brother, Hansford B. Smith, and wife, Phyllis, of Lampasas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandon.

The family requested memorials be made to Smith Cemetery at Oakalla or the Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department.
