Mustangs' Goodman filthy in 25-4A-opener
Marble Falls' junior lefty stymies Badgers, records third shutout in 4 starts

If you told Lampasas head baseball coach Brian McBeth he'd get a solid start out of pitcher Stetson Magilke and a strong defensive effort on the road in the districtopener, he'd take it every time.

He got both Tuesday night when his Badgers traveled to Marble Falls to open District 25-4A play at scenic Mustang Field.

Unfortunately, he got them on a night when his team was facing one of the hottest pitchers in the state.

Mustang junior left-hander Casey Goodman threw a two-hit shutout, striking out 11 in a 6-0 win.

"We've just got to hit the ball," McBeth said. "We've had trouble with lefties all year, but we've got to learn to hit them because we're going to keep seeing them. We'll probably see another one this weekend"

The Badgers (3-11 overall, 0-1 in district) are scheduled to play host to Burnet Saturday at 7 p.m. Marble Falls improved to 8-5-1 overall, and 1-0 in district with the win.

Goodman improved to 4-0 on the year and recorded his third shutout in four starts. He threw a no-hitter against Austin LBJ, a two-hit shutout against Kerrville Tivy and beat Fredericksburg 2-1. In 26.2 innings, Goodman has allowed one run and has struck out 48.

Goodman carried a perfect game into the fifth before walking Magilke to lead off the inning. Cody Bailey broke up the no-hitter later in the inning with a slow-rolling single to third base.

Bailey's hit was officially scored an error on third baseman Tanner Shaffer, despite the fact that Shaffer had to make a hurried, offbalance throw. LHS shortstop Justin Rainwater killed any debate in the top of the seventh inning with a sharply hit single to right field.

Magilke, who has battled arm problems all season, put together a gutty performance Tuesday. Using a sharp over-the-top curve and a sweeping three-quarters curve to constantly work out of trouble, Magilke struck out five hitters in four-plus innings, stranding eight Mustangs on base. He allowed six hits and four runs in the loss. The Badger defense committed just one error behind Magilke and reliever Kyle Landry.

"Stetson threw the ball well tonight," McBeth said. "That was his best outing of the season."
