Texas historical marker dedicated at Hostess House
The Oran Milo Roberts Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas recently dedicated a Texas State Historical Marker honoring the Hancock Springs Hostess House.
Chapter president Judy O. Smith opened with a prayer and welcomed about 50 guests. Vice president Diane Davis led the pledge to the American flag, and Carol Wright, past president, led the pledge to the Texas flag.
Past president Glynda Carpenter introduced guest speakers Jeff Jackson, chairman of the Lampasas County Historical Commission; Dick Ryan, former member of the Texas Historical Commission; Jack Calvert, former mayor of Lampasas; W.J. McLean, former Lampasas councilman; and J.C. Ewing Jr., certified public accountant.
Each speaker reminisced about their particular part in the saga of the Hostess House from the time it was on the verge of being razed to the present day.
Following the speeches, "Texas, our Texas" was sung, followed by the benediction by chaplain Wilda Mullins.
Marker committee members Lila Goodson, Mrs. Mullins and Charlene Nash unveiled the marker amidst high winds.
The chapter had items left from previous fund-raisers -- including the Lampasas quilts -- displayed on tables for sale to accrue funds for building maintenance.
