Former LISD superintendent dies

Jack Lacy
Former Lampasas Independent School District Superintendent Jack Webb Lacy died March 9, 2008, at Rollins Brook Community Hospital in Lampasas. He was 79.

Funeral services were March 12 at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas with Minister Reid Schaub officiating. Graveside services followed at Sipe Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Lacy was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Cross Plains, the son of Jasper Watson Lacy and Hettie Webb Lacy.

He grew up in Cross Plains, where he graduated from high school in 1946.

Mr. Lacy attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree. He later completed his master's degree at Howard Payne University.

In 1951, he was stationed at Fort Hood while serving in the U.S. Army. He later served in Germany for 16 months with the 4th Armored Division.

On Dec. 19, 1953, he married Betsy Whiteside in Sipe Springs.

He began teaching agriculture in Coleman in 1953, and in 1955, he and his wife moved to Lampasas, where he continued his long career in ag education.

Mr. Lacy's students won numerous awards showing livestock. George Herrmann won three major stock shows under his instruction, and many other breed championships were won, as well.

In 1966 and 1967, Mr. Lacy served as president of the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. He also judged many county livestock shows and major shows where he had a keen eye for a good show steer.

In 1971, Mr. Lacy hung up his show clippers and began his tenure as superintendent for the Lampasas ISD, a position he held until 1977.

After retiring from the school district, Mr. Lacy ran a westernwear store and was a real estate broker.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club. In addition, he served on the Spring Ho Committee and numerous other civic committees.

He is survived by a son, Wade Lacy, and wife, Louise; granddaughters, Betsy Shea Lacy, Leanna Brehm, Lauren Brehm and Erin Lafferty; and great-granddaughters, Destiny Brehm and Addison Lafferty.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Harlon Lacy; and a sister, Lenora Newton.

The family requested memorials be made to Lampasas County Youth Livestock Association.
