Mrs. Rowntree

Annie Smith Rowntree
Annie Lucile Smith Rowntree, 96, died March 9, 2008, at her home in Grand Prairie.

A memorial service is March 14 at 10 a.m. at Baker Chapel of First Methodist Church of Grand Prairie. Burial will follow at Smith Cemetery near Lampasas in Oakalla.

Mrs. Rowntree was born in 1912 on a ranch on Rocky Creek near Oakalla in Burnet County, about 20 miles from Lampasas, the daughter of Edgar "E. Babe" and Leila Mae Wykes Smith.

The Smith family lived at the ranch until 1918 when their house burned. They moved to Lampasas where Mrs. Rowntree attended school and graduated from Lampasas High School.

Mrs. Rowntree attended Southwestern University in Georgetown before returning home to marry John Thomas Rowntree in 1930.

The family lived in Greenville, San Angelo and Canadian, as well as Lampasas, before moving to Grand Prairie in 1956.

Mrs. Rowntree finished her college degree at West Texas State College in 1957. She began her 20 years as a language arts teacher at Lee Middle School in Grand Prairie, retiring in 1976.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Grand Prairie Woman's Club, 3 G's, Rejevian Book Club, Grand Prairie Retired Teachers and others.

Mrs. Rowntree enjoyed reading, keeping journals and painting.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Mary Kuhn and husband, Robert Rogers, Martha and David Brownlie and Rebecca Moore, all of Grand Prairie, Ruth Hather and Charles Hendryx, of Honolulu, Hawaii, John T. Rowntree and wife, Mary Schleppegerell, of Dexter, Mich., David and Sheila Rowntree, of Concord, Calif., and Paul and Beverly Rowntree, of Colleyville; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

The family requested memorials be made to Methodist Children's Home, 1111 Herring Ave., Waco, TX 76708.
