LHS track teams cool off a bit at Fredericksburg
Neither team was able to generate that kind of success Saturday at the Fredericksburg Relays. The varsity girls finished 11th, and the varsity boys placed ninth. At the junior varsity level, the LHS girls placed 11th, and the boys finished 10th. Pflugerville Hendrickson won the varsity girls' division with 174 points, 54 points better than second place Fredericksburg and 102 better than third-place Taylor. Fredericksburg won all three of the remaining divisions, outscoring second-place Hendrickson 140-123 in the varsity boys' division. On the varsity girls' side, the high jump was the best event for the Lady Badgers. Jennifer Howard and Jontell Ritz tied for third place at four feet, 10 inches. In the 300 hurdles, Courtney Carpenter placed fifth in a time of 50.2 seconds. She qualified in a time of 50.1. In the 200 meters, Ashley Summers had the fifth-best time (28.2) in the qualifying round but missed the finals. In the pole vault, Jessica Sterling finished just out of the points, placing seventh with an up-and-over of 7 feet, six inches, and the 400 relay team of Summers, Makayla Valles- Donaldson, Sarah Pillow and Howard also finished seventh in a time of 52.5. On the varsity boys' side, senior high jumper Clay Tyner finished second in the high jump at 6 feet, two inches. Fredericksburg's Josh Weirich won the event at 6 feet, six inches. In the long jump, Aaron Reyna edged teammate Tyler Phelan via the jumps tiebreaker. Reyna finished fifth and Phelan sixth, both jumping 20 feet, one inch on their best effort. The 800 relay team of Cory Summers, Aaron Reyna, Tyler Phelan and Angelo Hardy finished fifth in its finals heat in 1:36.23. That was the sixth best time of the day and would have placed second in the other finals heat. Kooper Liverman finished sixth in the 300 hurdles in 42.13. Heath Cofield finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 1/2 inch, edging teammate Brode DuBose's throw of 42-111/4.
