Texas A&M to hold summer math clinic

Registration is under way for sixth- through 12- graders to attend the 2008 Summer Math Clinic at Texas A&M University.

The clinic, sponsored by the Mathematics Education Program in the College of Education and Human Development, will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon May 31-June 27, with certified teachers working with students each day in both individual and small group settings.

Robert Capraro, associate professor of mathematics education and director of the clinic, said it will provide mathematics development and enrichment by assessing students' ability and providing individualized acceleration of their math skills.

"Our summer math clinic is unique in that it is designed to enrich the math skills of students enrolled as well as the skills of those mathematics teachers serving as clinic tutors," Capraro said.

"At the end of the clinic, these teachers will bring back newly acquired skills to their own school districts, colleagues and students."

In past years, students have been involved in various activities ranging from a patterns and proportions operation to developing the most effective and efficient paper airplane design.

Using the concepts of geometry, measurement, probability and statistics, students conducted experiments to determine the best materials, design and flight techniques to compete for the Guinness World Record for a paper airplane.

"Kids learn math by participating in fun activities," Capraro said. "Students of all mathematics skill levels can benefit from this unique program because of its individualized, one-on-one instructional focus."

To register, contact Stephanie Fisseler at stephanief@tamu.edu or by phone at (979) 845- 3013. Clinic cost if $175 per student for the whole month.

Space is limited, so early reservations are encouraged.
