Mr. Mathis

William Glynn Mathis Sr.
Former Lampasas County resident William Glynn Mathis Sr., 69, of Leroy died March 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

Funeral services are March 11 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Perry officiating. Burial will follow at Riesel Cemetery.

Mr. Mathis was born July 12, 1938, in Lampasas, to Chesley Coy and Hattie Elve Harbour Mathis.

He graduated from Lometa High School, where he met and married Janet Marie Bilton.

Mr. Mathis went to work for El Paso Natural Gas Co. in Jal, N.M. After moving to Waco, he worked for Young Brothers Construction Co. until he bought his first backhoe in 1961.

He moved to Gatesville and went into business for himself as an independent contractor and a cattle rancher.

He is survived by his wife of Leroy; a son, William (Bill) Glynn Mathis Jr., and wife, Shea, of Franklin; daughters, Dea Ann Dees, and husband, David, of Axtel, and Glynda Marie Floyd, and husband, Wayne of Gatesville; daughter-in-law, Nancy Mathis DeWitt, and husband, Mike, of Riesel; 17 grandchildren, David Dees III and wife Krystal, Brandi Powell, Casey Elfrez and husband Richard, Chance Toole, Cody Mathis, Amber Sims and husband CJ, Colton Mitchell, Dakota Dees, Teilor Floyd, Caisyn Mathis, Cally, Colton, Camdyn, Caryson, Jessica and husband Ashley, Christopher and Makenzi; five great-grandchildren, Keeley Powell, Kenley Turner, Logan Toole, Kaitlyn Yezak and Ava Dees; a brother, Coy; sisters, Donnis, Neva, Joy Ethelyne and Debbie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tony Lynn Mathis, on Nov. 10, 1991.

Pallbearers are Tom Jarrett, Kyle Pruitt, Larry Pruitt, Cade Reynolds, Curtis Whitney and Randall Whitney. Honorary pallbearers are Sydney Cassidy and Billy Dyer.
