Tree planted to honor Arbor Day

Arbor Day was observed recently by members of Browning Community Garden Club with the planting of a crepe myrtle at the Kempner Post Office.

Doris Magnor, club vice president, gave the welcome address and recognized special guests, Precinct 1 County Commissioner Robert Vincent; Kempner City Secretary Frances Spinney; Kempner Mayor Gene Isenhour; Kempner Postmaster Penne Reagy; Oakalla/Kempner 4-H group leader Rod Freeman; Troop 90 Scoutmaster Kit Byrd; the Rev. Don Cosper of Kempner First Baptist Church; the Rev. Thomas Edwards, Clear Creek Baptist Church; and the speaker, James MacCollum.

Boy Scouts posted the colors and joined the 4-H group in leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Cosper gave the invocation, followed by singing of "America the Beautiful." Brooklyn and Drew DeKort recited "The Arbor Day Tree." Isenhour read a proclamation, and the Conservation Pledge was read in unison.

Sharron Van Weelden, Arbor Day chair, introduced the speaker. His topic was on trees in the Bible.

Roxanne Dewalt dedicated the tree, and it was accepted by Mrs. Reagy, who expressed her pleasure in the continued landscaping of the grounds.

The benediction, given by Edwards, closed the ceremony.
