Ecclesiastical architecture is topic of Pierian meeting

Jane McMillin, a member of the GFWC/TFWC Pierian Club, gave the program on development of ecclesiastical architecture during the Feb. 12 meeting at the home of Carole Marwitz.

With pictures and drawings to illustrate her points, Ms. McMillin traced the ecclesiastical architecture from the very early Christian era. She described houses of worship in the Byzantine Empire.

The architecture spread into Western Europe with slight changes. The interest turned to attracting more people with larger churches, and the churches became more functional, larger and taller. Pointed arches replaced the rounded ones.

Twenty members were present for the meeting, hosted by Nina Lee Rasmussen, Marion Hammett and Mrs. Marwitz.

President Sue Zane Faulkner presided.

Corresponding secretary Karen Cambon read a letter from the director of the Fort Hood USO thanking the club for its donation in December.

The club voted to give a scholarship again this year and to continue to donate to the Lampasas Public Library.

Nominating committee chairman Ms. McMillin presented a slate of officers for the next biennium as follows: Susan Browder, president; Ruthie Martin, president-elect; Jane Westerfield, vice president; Cindy Abel, recording secretary; Carol Wright, corresponding secretary; and Lucy Walker, treasurer. The slate was approved and installation will be at the April meeting.

Ms. Faulkner proposed an amendment to the constitution and bylaws to be voted on at the next meeting.

She also announced the Capitol District Spring Convention will be in Giddings March 11, and Crystal Hammett, treasurer, will be installed as the second vice president of the district.

Ms. Faulkner said she received a letter requesting the Pierians and the 36 Club host the Spring Convention March 18, 2009. After the club agreed, Ms. Faulkner volunteered to chair the planning committee with a chairman from the 36 Club.

Next meeting is March 11 in the home of Mrs. Browder. Nancy Patteson and Mrs. Walker will be co-hostesses.
