TPWD to present March orientation to cave rescue

Colorado Bend State Park will be the site for a March 15-16 orientation to cave rescue by the South Central Region of the National Cave Rescue Commission, in conjunction with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

The orientation consists of classroom and fieldwork in all phases of cave rescue including underground environment, vertical operations, extrication techniques, medical management, communications systems, and the organization and management of cave rescue operations.

Participants typically include cavers, emergency service personnel and emergency manages.

The seminar provides about 16 hours of instruction over two days. Fieldwork can be strenuous, and participants must be in good physical health.

Participants must sign a liability waiver at check-in registration. Those under 18 should contact the course coordinator prior to registering.

Meals and accommodations

Everyone is on their own regarding meals during the seminar. There are no cafes, restaurants or grocery stores near the conference center. There are refrigerators, a stove and a barbecue pit. Accommodations are limited, and participants should plan on camping. Campsites are available, and camping and parking is free for students in the course. Potable water and restrooms are available.

The caves

Average high temperature in March is about 70 degrees. The average low is around 45. Cave temperatures are in the mid-60s to 70s. Caves are generally small and tight. The 100 percent humidity underground guarantees a lot of sweating, so clothing should be cool, loose fitting and durable.

Personal equipment requirements

Approved climbing/caving helmet; three light sources, one helmet mounted; rugged clothing (turnout gear is not appropriate); sturdy footwear for fieldwork; gloves; small, rugged pack; water bottle; and notebook/pencil or pen.

Recommended equipment

Knee pads; elbow pads; large trash bags; non-perishable food; insulated underwear; rain gear; and lawn chair.

Instructors

All instructors hold current instructor registration with The National Cave Rescue Commission. All instructors have multiple years of experience at regional and national NCRC seminars. Other qualified individuals will assist with instruction as needed and as appropriate.

Registration fee is $50.
