SPORTS SHORTS HOLE-IN-ONE WJ McLean, a 1947 Lampasas High School graduate, hit a hole-in-one Tuesday at Hancock Park Golf Course. McLean, who played football and baseball and also participated on the yearbook staff at LHS, sank his tee shot on the par 3 hole No. 6. The shot was witnessed by Merritt Romans and Harry Hollister. SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL Hutto's Texas Bulldogs football team has scheduled open tryouts on March 15 at the old Hippo Stadium off Highway 79. The Bulldogs are members of the World Football League, which has semiprofessional teams across the country. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Registration is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. and tryouts at 9 a.m. There is a $35 nonrefundable tryout fee due before or at registration. Ward Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for March 8 at Hidden Oaks Golf Course in Granbury. Ward, who was a high school coach in Texas from 1948 until 1982, has a son, Benny Ward, who resides in Lampasas. The tournament raises money for scholarships for Granbury High School students. The cost is $65 per player, and the format is four-person scramble. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. To sign up, call (817) 326-4693. RUNNING The Liberty Hill Run at the Ranch Fun Run is scheduled for April 6. The event, which features a 5K run and a 1-mile walk, will be held at the Stonewall Ranch at 315 Stonewall Blvd. in Liberty Hill. The race costs $15 per runner for the 5K if runners register online at www.runtex.com before April 2. The cost is $20 per runner after April 2. The one-mile walk is $10 early or late.
