Honorable mention
Chisum Cope, a senior at Merkel High School, was named to the Class 2A All-State Team as an honorable mention punter by the Associated Press sports editors. Cope averaged just over 35 yards per punt and sent the ball sailing 17 times in the 2007 season. His longest punt was 43 yards. Two of his punts landed inside the opponent's 20- yard line. In addition, the Texas High School Coaches Association placed Cope on its Class 2A Academic All-State Team. He also was unanimously named to the All-Big Country team picked by the Abilene Reporter News sports staff and was recently chosen to play in the area All-Star Fellowship of Christian Athletes Football Classic in June. Cope is the grandson of Larry and Dorothy Morrison and the great-grandson of Almarine Klose and Mable Morrison, all of Lometa. Cope is pictured with his coach, Keith Mullins.
