Hornets win 2, move into 2nd-place tie
The Hornets (16-5 overall, 2-1 in district) are tied with Eden, one game behind district leader Richland Springs. Lometa will play host to third-place Rochelle (2-2 in district) at 6:30 p.m. today. In the 51-26 win against Cherokee, the Hornets led 36-4 at the half, allowing head coach Wendell Bradley to give some junior varsity players some varsity minutes. TJ Rolan led the Hornets with 14 points and added five rebounds. Joe Michael Rivera recorded nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals despite playing a little more than a half. Brandon Faubion and David Cruz chipped in with six points apiece. In the 64-63 win at Lohn, Faubion hit an eight-foot jumper with 20 seconds to play to give the Hornets the lead. On Lohn's ensuing possession, Rivera came up with a defensive rebound that sealed the game.
"They really worked to take Joe Michael out of the game, and Eric Belyeu, David Cruz and Bubba Salinas made some big 3-pointers," Bradley said. "That loosened them (Lohn) up, and opened up the middle. It's early, but we're in con- tention for a playoff spot. When Rochelle comes in here, we need to take care of business." Lometa Girls The LHS girls' basketball team bounced back from a lopsided loss against Cherokee last Friday with a strong performance against Lohn on Tuesday. The Lady Hornets (0-5 in district) were outscored 16-7 in the fourth quarter of a 43-28 loss against Cherokee, but they jumped out to a 13-2 lead in a 47-45 loss to Lohn. The Lady Hornets are scheduled to play host to Rochelle at 6:30 p.m. today. In the loss to Cherokee, Taylor Bradley had 12 points. Jeanette Roslaes scored seven, and Patricia Viera scored four.
