Retired teachers retire scrapbook

Lampasas County Retired Teachers Association met Jan. 8 in the Lampasas ISD Board Room with 30 members present.

President Kay Gray-Fox presided. Following invocation by Edith McCandless and pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags led by Peggy Wolfe, Gene Landrum and David Hausmann led the group in three songs.

Several chairman gave committee reports, and Mrs. McCandless, historian, presented the scrapbook she was retiring because it was full. In it is the organization's history since its inception in 1969. She purchased a new scrapbook to begin this year.

Mrs. Fox also announced the deadline for scholarship applications is Feb. 1, and the 2008 RTA Convention will be in El Paso April 15-17. She plans to attend, and the local association needs to send delegates.

The association also was invited to a meeting in Killeen to hear Texas Retired Teachers Assoc. Executive Director Tim Lee speak.

Linda Abshier introduced antiques appraiser Bill Marsh of Kerrville. He looked at items members brought to the meeting. With help from his assistant Betty Bill, Marsh briefly appraised and discussed each item and gave some insight into collecting antiques and collectibles.

He advised that the antique market is constantly changing and has become less popular. There are certain items, he said, such as coin

collections, that are still valuable.

Marsh advised members to sell those antiques being held in anticipation of becoming wealthy someday.

After the meeting, members adjourned to the Green Frog Tea Room in the Hostess House for a Dutch-treat lunch.

Next meeting is Feb. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the LISD Board Room. Jeananne Elkins, a physical therapist, will give the program on safety, prevention and mobility.
