Former law official dies Monday at Metroplex
      Charles Edward Wernette, 63, of Lampasas County died Dec. 31, 2007, at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen. Funeral services were Jan. 3 at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas with Bruce Crawford officiating. Burial was at Nix Cemetery in Lampasas County.

Smart tabbed principal for campus at Lometa

      At a recent meeting, the Lometa ISD Board of Trustees named Jamie Smart as principal of the Lometa Alternative School. Smart previously served as the school's director. After a public hearing on House Bill 621 regarding the taxing of goods in transit, the board took action on a taxing policy.

Party election filing ends
      Filing for party primary elections, which will be held March 4, has ended. Runoff elections will follow April 8, if necessary. Today (Friday) is the first day to apply for a ballot by mail. Applications for mail ballots must be received by Feb. 26. Feb. 4 is the deadline for voter registration.
