Mrs. Heavner
Mrs. Heavner died Dec. 27. She was 82. She was born Dec. 30, 1924, in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of James Robert and Jeannie Marguerite Harrison Kay. Mrs. Heavner graduated from Lawrence High School in 1942 and began nurses' training at Lawrence General Hospital in January 1943. She left training to marry Capt. John H. Hargreaves. They had four children. She was married to CSM Paul J. Heavner in 1964. Mrs. Heavner saw her husbands through three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. She was an active Army wife for over 30 years and held various offices in the Officers and NCO Wives clubs. She also volunteered many hours with Army Emergency Relief. She was "mom" to many young soldiers and their wives throughout the 38 years of both husbands' Army careers. Mrs. Heavner worked as a nurse's aide at civilian hospitals or nursing homes during stateside tours of duty. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and Order of the Eastern Star. An avid baseball fan, her hobbies included watching the Atlanta (Boston) Braves and many of her grandchildren's Little League and high school games. Mrs. Heavner enjoyed sewing, reading, scrabble and crossword puzzles. Survivors include her children, Jean A. Harrison, and Alton, of Brownfield, Robert D. Hargreaves, and Julia, of Green Bay, Wis., Donna L. Rodgers, and Richard, of Temple, Okla., and Cheryl K. Dugger, and David, of Lampasas; a sister, Dorothy I. Birrille, of Lady Lake, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Mrs. Heavner was preceded in death by a brother, James R. Kay Jr.; by her husband, Paul, in 1990; by her children's father, in 2004; and by one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers were grandsons, James Robert Kreiser-Harrison, Ronnie Lee Fowler, Paul Christopher Harrison, Martin James Hoover, James Houston Dugger and Curtis Coleman Bryant.
