Third-quarter woes cost Lady Badgers in Burnet
The Lady Badgers appeared to have everything under control at halftime.
They held Burnet to single-digits in the opening quarter and owned a two-point advantage heading into intermission, but Lampasas lost its cool in the third quarter, allowing the Lady Dawgs to rip off 21 points en route to a 55-44 victory.
Burnet scored just 21 points in the entire first half before exploding in the third.
"We did a lot of good things, but in the third quarter we did a poor job of attacking the basket on offense, and defensively we gave up some threes that we knew we shouldn't have," head coach Stuart Beckwith said. "Little things like that against a good team will cost you."
Lampasas turned things around in the final period, but the damage had already been done.
Junior post Lauren Barlow, who lives in Burnet, finished with a game-high 19 points.
"She lives there with her mom and her stepdad, and they both teach over here (at LHS), so that's why we're fortunate enough to have her attending Lampasas," Beckwith said. "Last night we were sure happy she does."
Wing Carey Yeary sparked the Lady Badgers (3-12) to a quick start, connecting on an early 3- pointer as Lampasas built a 7-1 lead.
The offensive outburst did not last, however, as the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of a Lampasas scoring drought and clawed their way back into the game.
Despite the setback, Beckwith knows if his team could have avoided a few mental mistakes then the outcome might have been different.
"The kids played hard the whole game," the coach said. "We didn't always play smart, but we put in the effort."
