Badgers go cold, fall 67-51
Senior Heath Hopson elevates to block Zakk Revelle's layup attempt during the Badgers' 67-51 road loss Tuesday evening. Hopson scored a team-high 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots before fouling out of the game in the fourth quarter. By the time the fourth quarter ended, the Badgers' shooting was as cold as the snowflake-producing temperatures outside the gymnasium.
After a slow start in Burnet, Lampasas heated up from the field and took a one-point lead into the locker room before the Bulldogs limited the Badgers to just sevenof 21 shooting in the second half, including a frosty three-of-13 performance in the fourth quarter.
While the Badgers struggled offensively, the Bulldogs took advantage of their freebies, hitting 21 free throws in the second half to pull out a 67-51 win on their home court.
Starters Heath Hopson and Warren Scott found themselves riding the pine during crunch time after fouling out, leaving the rest of the Badgers to fend for themselves while Burnet racked up points at the charity stripe. In the fourth quarter, 12 of Burnet's 22 points came at the line.
Senior forward Warren Scott (34) fights with a Bulldog player for the ball before fouls sent him to the bench. The starter finished the night well below his averages with just three points (1-12 FG) and two rebounds. In all, the Bulldogs took 17 more free throws than the Badgers (37- 20), connecting on 28 while Lampasas made 14.
"I should have changed defenses to offset their offense, but it is hard to guard them when they are shooting free throws," head coach Scott Harrelson said.
Hopson led the team with 22 points before taking a seat with 5:28 remaining in the contest and Lampasas trailing by nine, 52-43.
Scott struggled on both ends of the floor before fouling out. He finished with three points on oneof 12 shooting and grabbed just two rebounds. Senior Jordy Carnes tallied 12 points but missed all three of his shot attempts in the fourth quarter.
"We are going to have to do a better job staying within our offense to win," Harrelson said.
Sophomore guard Colton Perkins keeps his eye on the ball as he stays in front of Bulldog Matt Breneman. Coming off the bench, Perkins was one-of-one from the floor with four rebounds and an assist. Both teams needed several minutes to warm up, but after falling behind 18-10 early in the second quarter, Hopson and Carnes combined for nine consecutive points to give Lampasas the lead.
Hopson closed the half by singlehandedly keeping the Badgers ahead, ripping off the team's final eight points to give Lampasas a 27- 26 halftime advantage.
Burnet was just two of 14 from the floor in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, the Badgers tied the Bulldogs with 10 points apiece from the field, but Burnet built an eight-point advantage at the free-throw line where guard Zakk Revelle practically set up shop. Revelle was a perfect 13 of 13 for the game, with 11 coming after intermission.
With Lampasas burdened by foul woes, reserves Jonathan VanLiew and Colton Perkins combined for over a third of the Badgers' fourthquarter production. VanLiew recorded two steals and six points, while sophomore Perkins finished with two points, four rebounds and an assist.
The Badgers, however, never got closer than nine points in the final period.
"In the fourth quarter we weren't patient and didn't run any offense," Harrelson said.
The Badgers are participating in the Hays Rebel Classic tournament this weekend before returning home to host Westwood on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
