The Lampasas Middle School eighth-grade "A" team took a 2- 2 record into the Thanksgiving holiday after knocking off Marble Falls and making a nice run in the Burnet Tournament.
The Badgers started their season with a 40-30 home win over Marble Falls.
Bryce Perkins and Mason Murray each scored eight points in the victory while Beau Webb chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
Defensively, Lampasas recorded 16 steals, led by Murray's five and Perkins' three.
"We played really tough team defense throughout the game, never letting Marble Falls get any offensive rhythm," head coach Aaron Nuckles said.
The next day, Lampasas traveled to Burnet for the first round of a tournament.
The Badgers drew the host team and built an 18-10 lead before Burnet rallied back to force overtime.
Murray, who scored a teamhigh 12 points, connected on a 3-pointer that brought the Badgers within two points late in the extra period. A defensive stop gave Lampasas an opportunity to tie or win the contest, but its shot at the buzzer was off and the Badgers lost 34-32.
Lampasas bounced back in the consolation bracket, advancing to the championship round after narrowly defeating Mountain Valley 30-29.
Cullen Singleton (11 pts), Kramer Watson (10 pts, 12 reb) and Murray (9 pts) provided all the Badgers' offense in the contest, but it was the team's defense that won the game.
"This game was close throughout as solid team defense once again let us get a victory," Nuckles said.
In the consolation championship game, the Badgers simply ran out of gas, falling to Marble Falls.
"We missed several put-back attempts on the offensive end and also too many fast-break layups," Nuckles said. "[But] I was very proud of the way the team played throughout the tournament."
The eighth-grade "B" team won its season opener 28-19 over Marble Falls.
Josh Barbero was the team's leading scorer with eight points, followed by David Strayley who tallied seven.
The duo were extremely effective according to coach Dustin Baumann.
"Barbero and Strayley provided much help while being dominant forces underneath the basket while Ethan Scheafnocker handled the ball well at the point guard position," the coach said.
