Browning garden group studies butterflies, moths
      Hideko Dewalt gave a presentation on "Butterflies and Moths" when the Browning Community Garden Club met recently at Mrs. Dewalt's home in Copperas Cove. While living in Panama for three years, the Dewalts began their collection with excursions into the jungle. She explained how they caught, prepared and mounted the different varieties for display.

      The 2008 Christmas Home Tour, "An Americana Christmas," will be presented Dec. 7 from 1-5 p.m. Five local homes will be showcased, including the 403 W. First St. home of Wynema McGowan.

It's a boy!
      Jill and Brad Schaffer of Austin are the parents of a son, Hudson Ray, born Nov. 10, 2008, at 3:24 p.m. at Seton Northwest Hospital in Austin. At arrival, Hudson weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches in length. Grandparents are Ken and Lou Wiginton of Lampasas, Moody Schaffer of Mexia, and Fran Langwell of Amarillo.

CTC releases December non-credit course list
      The Central Texas College Continuing Education Department is conducting registration for classes in December. Introduction to the Internet and E-mail: Surf the information superhighway in this interactive class for beginners. Topics include e-mail basics, search engines, chat options and Internet security. The class will meet each Saturday, Dec. 6-20, from 8 a.m.

Crisis center seeks sponsors
      Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center is seeking sponsors for its Adopta Family program for the holiday season. New, unwrapped gifts, monetary donations and new toys are requested and will be distributed to needy families. Donations of gift wrap and ribbons also are sought.

      Cheyenne Maples, a Lampasas Middle School seventh-grader, performed at the Mason Opry with the legendary Curtis Potter (top photo). It was the second time they have performed on the same show.

Metroplex Hospital receives recognition
      Metroplex has been named one of the Best in Texas for Newborn Hearing Screening Programs in 2007 by the Texas Department of State Health Services, which is the highest rating possible for a birthing hospital. "We are very excited about this distinguished recognition," said Carolyn Lockridge, director of maternal and child services.

Yule trees, gingerbread houses to be on display
      Keystone Square Museum's annual Christmas Tree Exhibit and Gingerbread House Contests will kick off Dec. 5 during the Carol of Lights Festival at 303 S. Western St. This year's theme is An Americana Christmas. Decorated trees should be delivered to the museum on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Monday from 5-6 p.m.

      Courtyard Square Association is offering local non-profit food vendors an opportunity to set up a booth during the Carol of Lights Festival Dec. 5 at no charge to the organization. Carol of Lights brings hundreds of folks to the downtown area for the local Yule season kickoff.

HCCAC raises $60,000 at Cowboy Up event
      The Hill Country Children's Advocacy Center raised $60,000 during its recent Cowboy Up for Kids event at Boulder Creek Farms near Marble Falls. Money will help provide services for 275 child victims who have been served by HCCAC staff so far this year.

Heritage group to celebrate Christmas
      The Adamsville Heritage Association will complete its 100-year anniversary celebration on Dec. 6 from 6-9 p.m. A two-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 281 will be lighted for the holidays, and Adamsville Baptist Church will have a live Nativity built by David Brink.

Museum Foundation to release history book
      The Lampasas County Museum Foundation has announced that Keystone Square Museum's photographic history, "Lampasas County," is slated to be released on Feb. 16. The price will be $21.99 plus tax. "Lampasas County," at 128 pages, includes over 200 photographs with captions. It is being published by Arcadia Publishing in its Images of America series.

Master Naturalist program to be offered
      An opportunity to learn about the ecology of the Hill Country will be available this spring through the Highland Lakes Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists. The focus of the Master Naturalist program is to increase a person's knowledge of natural Texas, and then to apply that knowledge through volunteer service to local communities.
