TENNIS

The Lampasas freshman and junior varsity tennis squads concluded their fall seasons last week with a pair of tournaments on the road.

On Tuesday, the freshmen traveled to Georgetown where the duos of Bradley Poston/ Jacob Ham, Nichole Queen/ Rebecca Northrop and Ronni Jo Varney/Amiee Aviles-Ponce all went 1-2.

In singles, Ashley Hause lost both her matches.

With the varsity team making it to regionals this season, the sub-varsity teams both experienced shortened seasons.

"The players will have four or five tournaments next semester," head coach Kenneth Peiser said. "[They] were able to gain knowledge on how they will need to practice for upcoming tourneys."

The Lampasas JV team made the trek to Georgetown on Thursday.

Paige Jones and Katrina Salazar teamed up to take their opponents to a tiebreaker before losing, while Lisa Orner and Tabitha Wristen fell in two matches during the tournament.

Clay Garrett and Juan Munoz also fell to defeat in doubles.

In singles action, Dylan Ham won in both the first and second rounds before succumbing in the third.

"He played good, but he was not aggressive enough to win the points," Peiser said.

For the girls, Michelle Morris went 2-2 during the day but also lacked the aggressiveness to win her consolation semi-final match, the coach said.

The tennis teams will return to action in February when the varsity and junior varsity teams begin match play.

HS FOOTBALL

Former Badger Lee Wiginton, in his first year as head coach at Mexia, led the Blackcats past Crockett 20-18 in a bi-district matchup Friday night.

The victory places the District 19-3A co-champions Mexia in a second-round contest against Gilmer this week.

Wiginton is in his ninth year as a football coach and has reached the playoffs in all but two seasons. Prior to coaching at Mexia, the former Lampasas quarterback took 1A Bosqueville and 2A Comfort to the postseason three times each.

Wiginton was under center for two seasons during the Badgers' run of five consecutive undefeated seasons in district play from 1986 to 1990.

LMS FOOTBALL

The Badgers' eighth-grade "A" team lost its season finale to Hudson Bend 12-0.

Lampasas had several opportunities to win the game, but some bad plays at key moments in the game hurt the Badgers.

"This is a great group of young men with a good future [ahead of them] for the Badgers," LMS athletic coordinator Jim Burks said.
