Force's U-14 squad remains undefeated
Luckily, Andres Cantor does not cover the Lampasas Force U-14 coed squad.
The overly exuberant Spanish soccer commentator known for his signature, drawn-out cry of "Goooal!", might have run out of oxygen during the Force's 9-0 shutout against the CCU Texans last weekend.
Within the first five minutes, Lampasas jumped out to a two-goal lead after a pair of scores from center striker Adrian Velarde.
In the closing minutes of the half Velarde struck again, giving his team a 3-0 advantage after the Force's defenders prevented the Texans from taking any shots on goal.
"Our success has come from all the individuals playing well as a team," head coach Jerry Barbero said. "We are strong from the back to the front."
After the break, the Force picked up right where the team left off when Anthony Velarde found the back of the net in the first minute of action.
Lampasas went on to tally five more goals before the final buzzer sounded.
Adrian Velarde netted his fourth score of the game in the second half, while Andrew Chapman and Jordan Jones posted a goal apiece.
After being moved from goal keeper to left striker, Joshua Barbero recorded two scores in the closing half.
Barbero's replacement, Tyler Jones, did not see any action come his way as the Texans never attempted a single shot on goal during the entire match.
"We defend well, pass effectively in transition, and work together up front to penetrate the opposition and find the back of the net," the coach said. "So far this season, we have scored 24 times against only three total goals from all the opposing teams."
The Force is the only undefeated team in its bracket and hopes to play for the Capitol Area Youth Soccer Association championship next weekend.
On Sunday, Lampasas faces the second-place CCU Vortex.
"The Vortex has only lost once in the regular season, but I am confident in my team," Barbero said.
The U-12 Force squad lost its first match of the season last Saturday, falling 5-3 to the Leander Rattlers.
Lampasas came out slow and found itself in a three-goal hole by the end of the first half.
"If we could have come out stronger in the beginning, the game could easily have gone the other way," head coach Greg Ruehlen said. "We had our chances to score in the first half, but the physical style of play from the Rattlers prevented us from settling into our rhythm."
Some halftime tweaking paid immediate dividends for the Force as Tristan Schroeder netted the team's first goal just three minutes into the second half.
Three minutes later, Alex Ruehlen brought the Force within a goal of the opponents by scoring from just inside the penalty area.
Chance Mason recorded another goal for the Force, but it was not enough as the Rattlers earned a 5-3 victory.
"We definitely outplayed them in the second half, as the 3-2 score for the half reflects," Ruehlen said. "We are looking forward to a possible rematch during the playoffs."
While the loss dropped Lampasas to second in its bracket, the Force team is guaranteed a spot in the CAYSA championship tournament Nov. 15-16.
"Despite the loss, I am very proud of this team's accomplishments," Ruehlen said. "A 6-1 record versus some very tough teams from the Austin area says a lot about the caliber of players we have in Lampasas."
In other Lampasas Soccer Association action, the Force U-16 team lost to the Santos 3-0. The Tri-City Express did not compete.
