Book highlights county venues

Several venues from Lampasas County and surrounding areas earned mention in "The Texas Hill Country" book. The Texas Hill Country has some remarkable food finds, and the area is becoming known as an "agricultural tourism" region. In fact, Internet travel giant Orbitz listed the Hill Country in a recent survey as second only to the Napa Valley as an agricultural tourism destination.

In her new publication, chef Terry Thompson-Anderson of Fredericksburg and photographer Sandy Wilson traveled the area in search of food and drink-related products. Their new book, "The Texas Hill Country: A Food and Wine Lover's Paradise," explores the food of the region and also the people who produce it.

Among the offerings are two pages on Lampasas, featuring Bradley Goat Farms and Eve's Cafe.

Lou Bradley has been making goat cheese for 25 years with her nubian and alpine goats. She told the authors she taught herself how to make cheese by reading and experimenting. She apparently learned well: Her first milk inspector encouraged her to get a license to manufacture cheese after tasting some of her trial batches.

Accompanying the page on Bradley Goat Farms is a chocolate and goat cheese creme brulee recipe by the author, who says Mrs. Bradley's soft chevre is perfect for the dessert.

And a feature on Eve Sanchez, owner of Eve's Cafe which she opened with her husband in 1995, includes her house salad and dressing recipe. When sharing her secret, Eve told the chef-author, "You must have the German white vinegar! It won't work with other kinds of vinegar." The pork schnitzel prepared in the cafe is typical of food found in small German villages, prepared in the traditional manner, writes the author.

Alamosa Wine Cellars in Bend is included in the book, as is the Cherokee Grocery, Oliver Pecan Co. of San Saba, and various Burnet and Marble Falls farms and eateries.

"The Texas Hill Country: A Food and Wine Lover's Paradise" is published by Shearer Publishing of Fredericksburg.
