      The Area 7 Young Farmers Association of Texas met recently for the annual convention hosted by Lampasas County Young Farmers. The meeting was held at the Lampasas High School agriscience building.

Events set to honor vets
      A number of events are planned next week to honor veterans. American Legion Post 277, along with area Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, will place flags on veterans' graves in Oak Hill Cemetery on Saturday at 8 a.m. The public is invited. About 100 people attended last year's event.

Adopt a Pet
      Chiquita is a friendly, young female chihuahua-mix. She has a brown coat with dark speckles and very long legs. Although Chiquita loves people she does not like other dogs or cats. She is always ready for a romp in the yard or to just sit with you. She is waiting to become a permanent member of a new, loving family.

      The Courtyard Square Association is offering non-profit organizations an opportunity to raise funds during the Carol of Lights Festival set Dec. 5 downtown. Free booth space and information is available by phoning Todd Briggs at 556-8030.

      The Lampasas FFA is preparing for the annual District FFA Leadership contest set Monday at Burnet High School. Agriscience students have been practicing for a variety of leadership competitions that focus on skills development.

      The 2008 Christmas Home Tour, "An Americana Christmas," will be presented Dec. 7 from 1-5 p.m. Five local homes will be showcased, including the 408 W. Second St. home of Nancy Gray. Tour tickets, at $7, will be available Nov.

Governor declares home care, hospice month
      As the Texas population continues to grow with individuals recovering from illnesses or injuries or suffering from chronic diseases, or having disabilities, or those who choose to spend their final days at home, home care and hospice are increasingly becoming the compassionate and cost effective solutions for thousands of Texans.

Halloween event is a success
      The 2008 Halloween Fest staged last week raised $7,400 for Lampasas Mission's food pantry, including a grant from Wal-Mart and funds raised at the event. A number of individuals, businesses, churches and community members were involved.

Gingerbread houses, trees to be judged
      Keystone Square Museum's annual Christmas Tree Exhibit and Gingerbread House contests will kick off Dec. 5 during the Carol of Lights Festival at 303 S. Western St. This year's theme is An Americana Christmas. Decorated trees should be delivered to the museum on Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Dec. 1 from 5-6 p.m.

Donations to purchase windows accepted
      Preservation Lampasas Inc. is sponsoring a "Buy a window" project to raise funds for restoration of the historic Lampasas Colored School. Plaques will be placed next to the window naming the donor or honoree. Cost is $1,300, and 11 windows are needed for the school.

Grief workshop set to be held
      Facing the holidays after the loss of a loved one is a bereavement workshop sponsored by Seton Highland Lakes Hospice. The event is set Wednesday from 3-4:30 p.m. at Marble Falls Public Library, 101 Main St. and again Nov. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Vanderveer Street Church of Christ, 102 Vanderveer in Burnet.

75 pints of blood received at drive
      The final American Red Cross blood drive of the year garnered 75 pints of blood, bringing the year's total to 344 gallons through five drives. And that translates into 1,032 lives saved, said Wanda Meyers, blood drive coordinator for AMVETS Post 80.

Girl Scout tea on tap
     Girl Scouts of Lampasas County will hold a tea celebrating Juliette Gordon Low's birthday. Mrs. Low was the founder of Girl Scouts. The event is Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church and is open to all current and past Girl Scouts.

Aglow set for meeting
      Lampasas Aglow, a community lighthouse of Aglow International, will meet Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at Holiday Inn Express. Ledell James of Austin will be the guest speaker. She was reared on an Indian reservation with her parents. When she was 17, her family left Arizona for Houston, and there, she met and married Jesse James.

Salvation Army readies for annual kettle drive
      Volunteers will begin ringing the bell for Salvation Army on Nov. 28 in front of Wal-Mart. Donations accepted in the kettle fund will be used for local units, which assist in areas of emergency utilities, medical, prescriptions, transportation and shelter.

      Rollins Brook Community Hospital employees recently presented a check to the Lampasas Boys & Girls Club to assist the youth organization with its operating expenses.

AARP senior driving class offered
      Seton Highland Lakes Hospital is co-sponsoring an AARP Senior Driving Class on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day at Woodlands Retirement Center, 700 Janet Dr. in Burnet. The eight-hour classroom refresher course is for motorists ages 50 and older and is a comprehensive nationwide course created especially for older drives.

Cove club to gather Toys for Tots
      Copperas Cove Double C Square Dance Club will hold a square dance to benefit Toys for Tots on Nov. 23 from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Copperas Cove VFW on Veterans Boulevard. Country star to headline motorcycle ride festivities
      Country music sensation Michael Scott will join Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, Fort Hood commanding general, as part of the first Phantom Thunder Motorcycle Ride festivities today on the military post. Scott will headline a free concert capping off a day of activities designed to promote motorcycle safety and pay tribute to veterans in advance of Veterans Day weekend.
