Badgers 'mauled' by Killeen
PHOTOS BY GABE WOLF The Kangaroos had their way offensively Friday night, accumulating 398 total yards of offense with 318 coming on the ground. It took a whole host of Badgers to bring down Marcus Tillman (21) who rushed for 79 yards on 11 carries in the game. The Badgers' defensive line saw its share of monsters on Halloween night.
Fielding an enormous offensive line consisting of three juggernauts who weigh over 285 pounds apiece, the Killen Kangaroos manhandled Lampasas at the line of scrimmage and on the scoreboard, posting a 38- 3 victory over the Badgers.
Just like in the horror movies, no matter what Lampasas did, nothing slowed down the relentless onslaught.
"They just mashed us," defensive coordinator Jimmy Randolph said. "They're big. They're huge.
"There was nothing we could do about it."
Slicing and cutting through the gaping holes created by the monstrous offensive linemen, the Roos (6-3, 3-2 district) rushed for 318 yards in the road win, building a 24-3 lead by halftime.
"They're big," head coach Ryan Bailey said. "They've got three D-I linemen, and they just lined up and went right at us.
Brode DuBose slips through the grasp of a Killeen defender as he runs toward a team-high 42 rushing yards. "We've got to get tougher up front."
The loss drops Lampasas' overall record to 0-9 (0-5 district), extending its losing streak to 19 games dating back to last season.
The Badgers started the contest with good field position after Killeen attempted an onsides kick. Lampasas took advantage of the failed attempt, marching down to the 4-yard line before a costly penalty knocked the team back five yards on third down.
After a Vann Millican incompletion, Lampasas settled for a 31- yard Joshua Akers field goal, taking a 3-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, Killeen posted its first points of the game shortly after quarterback Michael Cummings found an opening. He bolted 54 yards to the Badgers' 11-yard line. Four plays later, Cummings finished what he started, punching in a touchdown from two yards out.
"If we get [Cummings] tackled and keep them with a long field [Killeen might not score on the drive]," Randolph said.
Adrian Castillo (34) is consoled by his mom after playing his final game inside Badger Stadium. After the ensuing kickoff, Lampasas went three-and-out, and Killeen returned a short punt to the LHS 10-yard line. The Badgers played some strong defense deep in their own territory, forcing the Roos to kick a field goal that bumped their lead to seven points at 10-3.
On the first play following a touchback, the Badgers had a costly turnover. Millican's pass was intercepted, which gave Killeen prime position on its opponent's 17- yard line.
Two plays later, Jaquall Haskins carried the ball 13 yards to pay dirt with 2:18 left in the opening period.
Despite the Roos' early advantage, the Badgers stayed within reach of Killeen for a majority of the first half. Lampasas was a touchdown away from making it a one-possession game until the Roos picked off another Millican pass and drove 81 yards. Cummings found Ja'corie Baker for a six-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left before the break to give Killeen a 24- 3 advantage.
Joshua Akers scores the Badgers' only points of the evening on a 31-yard field goal, putting Lampasas ahead 3-0 with 8:33 remaining in the opening half. "The play right before the half hurt bad," Randolph said. "We sent a linebacker, and they stoned that and put it right in the hole."
In the second half, Killeen never attempted a pass, using its massive offensive line to clear space for the ground attack. The Roos scored the team's final pair of touchdowns on their first two possessions of third quarter, clinching the game at 38-3 with 1:31 left in the period before making a defensive stand and running out the clock.
"In the second half, they just mauled us," Bailey said.
The Badgers conceded 179 rushing yards and forced only three third downs in the entire closing half.
Haskins posted a game-high 87 rushing yards on 11 carries. Marcus Tillman ran the ball 11 times for 79 yards, and Cummings rushed for 56 yards.
Rush Seaver led Lampasas defensively, recording eight solo tackles and assisting on nine others. Ryan Abbott and Kasey Tucker combined for 11 solos and seven assists.
"[The defense] executed our scheme well, but it's like shooting BBs at a tank," Randolph said. "After awhile, the wear and tear of having 300-pounders leaning on you is going to wear you plum out.
"That's eventually what happened to us."
The Badgers conclude their regular season schedule Friday on the road against Hutto (5-4, 1-4).
