Republicans win Lampasas County votes
Several Republican candidates on Tuesday night recorded large margins of victory in Lampasas County, although official Electoral College totals in the presidential race have not been determined.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama defeated Republican John McCain nationally, with several major news networks declaring at least 338 Electoral College votes for Obama as of 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday. McCain tallied 5,628 votes in Lampasas County to Barack Obama's 1,895, however, and McCain won Lampasas County 74 percent to 25 percent. Libertarian Bob Barr received 68 votes in the county.
Republican John Cornyn retained his U.S. Senate seat with 4,309,428 votes statewide -- 55 percent of the Texas total. Democratic challenger Rick Noriega earned 3,378,074 votes -- 43 percent of the total -- and Libertarian Yvonne Adams Schick got 2 percent, with 184,116 votes. Cornyn registered 5,596 votes in Lampasas County to Democrat Rick Noriega's 1,693. Cornyn's total amounted to 75 percent of votes cast in Lampasas County, compared to 23 percent for Noriega and 3 percent for Ms. Schick, who claimed 222 votes in Lampasas County.
Republican Gail Lowe claimed 65 percent of the vote in her District 14 State Board of Education reelection bid. Mrs. Lowe totaled 375,959 votes district-wide and received 73 percent of the Lampasas County tally with 5,383 votes. Democratic challenger Edra Bogle claimed 31 percent of the district total, with 181,133 votes, and got 23 percent of the countywide total, with 1,722 votes. Libertarian John Shuey earned 4 percent district-wide with 21,316 votes. He also got 4 percent in Lampasas County, with 297 votes.
In the race for chief justice of the 3rd Court of Appeals District, Democrat Woodie Jones defeated Republican Ken Law 52 percent to 48 percent. Jones notched 447,316 votes overall, beating the incumbent justice by 41,000 votes. Law defeated Jones 70 percent to 30 percent in Lampasas County, however, with 5,092 votes to Jones' 2,214.
