Cowboy up for Kids fund-raiser slated
      The second annual Cowboy Up for Kids will be held Nov. 8 from 6-10 p.m. at Boulder Creek Farms, five miles east of Marble Falls on FM 1431. Eddie Eppler Chuckwagon Productions will provide dinner, with dance music and entertainment throughout the evening by KR Woods and his Cowboy Band.

Club hears information on pocket gardens
      Marlene Gillman of Killeen, director of Texas Garden Clubs District V, presented a program on pocket gardens at a recent meeting of Browning Community Garden Club. Mrs. Gillman suggested the home landscape be divided into one-third grass, one-third hardscape and one-third garden flower beds. Native adaptive plants and perennials were recommended.

      An account has been established at First Texas Bank in Lampasas for Michael Summerville, the 22-month-old son of Bill and Sabine Summerville of Bulverde, and the grandson of Jimmy and Dorothy Summerville of Lampasas and Marlice Patterson of Kempner.

Teen earns accolades at district FB contest
      The District 8 Farm Bureau Miss Farm Bureau, Talent find and Speech Contests were held in Temple on Oct. 18. Sara Jackson, daughter of Randle and Diana Jackson, represented Lampasas County in the Miss Farm Bureau Contest, taking the runner-up spot.

Classics set to gather Saturday
      Classics at the Classic will gather Saturday at 4 p.m. at the back parking lot of Storm's Drive-In. Anyone wishing to show off their classic vehicle is invited. Whether it is a Mopar, Ford, Chevy or Studebaker, any vehicle 20 years old or older can be shown, said Sharon Carrigan, event organizer.

LHS student earns spot in orchestra
      Michael Rios, a Lampasas High School senior, was named second alternate to the Texas Music Educator's Association Region 8 all-Region Orchestra. He auditioned for the orchestra on Oct. 25 at Temple High School. Rios plays string bass in the LHS band and electric bass in the high school jazz band.

      Burnet County Democrats will have an election day rally Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Diego's Mexican Restaurant in Burnet, south of Seton Hospital on U.S. Highway 281. All Democrats are invited. Hosts will be Guy Stuart, Burnet County Democratic chair, and Trey Brown, president of Burnet County Democrats.

      Lampasas County Farm Bureau Board of Directors met Oct. 14 for its monthly meeting. The board welcomed Asa Langford as a new director. Mickey Edwards was elected president. Other officers include Barney Groves, vice president; and Charlene Ruzicka, secretary.

Preservation Lampasas fund-raiser on tap to benefit Colored School restoration
      Preservation Lampasas will hold a fund-raising art exhibition and auction on Nov. 15 at First United Methodist Church's Wesley Fellowship Hall. The exhibition begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the auction at 6:30 p.m.

      The Central Texas Area American Business Women's Association Council will hold its quarterly meeting on Nov. 13 at the Howard Johnson, 803 E. Central Texas Expwy. in Killeen. Heart of Texas Chapter will host the meeting. Social begins at 6 p.m., and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per person, and reservations are due by Nov. 10.

Treatment for smokeless tobacco users available on Internet
      For the first time, effective treatment for smokeless tobacco addiction is available on the Internet through a research study funded by the National Cancer Institute. Chewing tobacco and snuff users ages 14 to 25 are invited to register with MyLastDip.com to take part in a free, self-help quitting program.

      Keystone Square Museum's annual Christmas Tree Exhibit and Gingerbread House Contests will kick off Dec. 5 during the Carol of Lights Festival at 303 S.       William and Ashley Withers of Lampasas announce the birth of their son, Randy Wade, born Oct. 11, 2008, at 3:22 p.m. in Georgetown. Upon arrival, Randy weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and was 18 inches in length. He joins a sister, Bayli.

Highland Lakes group to gather
      Debbie Carter, a member of the Highland Lakes Democratic Women, researched "Earmarks" that have been getting quite a bit of attention during this year's election. She shared her findings with the group at the recent meeting. The dictionary defines earmark, she said, as a designation (as in funds) for a specific user or owner -- as in money earmarked for education.

GED tests set at Gatesville
      The next GED test at Gatesville High School will be given Nov. 11-12. Those wishing to take the test must complete registration on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. in room 22 at the high school campus. Bring a current state or federal photo identification (such as Texas driver's license), a Social Security card and the $65 test fee.

Food bank seeks help in Austin
      More than half of the Capital Area Food Bank's donations each year come in during November and December. That's more than 635,000 pounds of food in two months. The food bank invites volunteers, 18 and older, to accept donations from the public on the receiving dock and/or inspect and sort food in product recovery each weekday through the end of the year.

Law Enforcement Report
      The following arrests were reported by law enforcement officials. Oct. 29 -- Bret David Bonner, 34, of Kempner for sexual assault of a child. He posted bond and was released the same day from the Lampasas County Jail. -- Michael Allen Longoria, 21, of Lampasas for theft of property over $50 and under $500. He was still in jail Thursday morning for that charge.

CASA to hold open house in Kingsland
      Court Appointed Special Advocates for the Highland Lakes Area will hold an open house on Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the CASA office, 1719 Ridgeview in Kingsland. CASA for the Highland Lakes Area volunteers advocate for children from Blanco, Burnet, Lampasas, Llano and San Saba counties who enter the foster care system because of abuse and/or neglect.

History book release slated
      The Lampasas County Museum Foundation has announced that Keystone Square Museum's photographic history, "Lampasas County," is slated to be released on Feb. 16. The price will be $21.99 plus tax. "Lampasas County," at 128 pages, includes over 200 photographs with captions. It is being published by Arcadia Publishing in its Images of America series.

      Nix School Community Center's annual all-you-can-eat chili lunch is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, and $3 for children 10 and under for chili, hot dogs, beans, cornbread, crackers, dessert and a drink with all the fixings.

Oakalla VFW plans fajita dinner, auction
      Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department's annual all-you-caneat fajita dinner is Nov. 1 from 5- 9 p.m. at the fire department. The meal will be $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under. A special raffle will be held for a .243 deer rifle and a Winchester pump shotgun. There also will be an auction at 7 p.m. and other raffles items.
