Ombudsmen sought for program
The Area Agency on Aging of Central Texas is seeking long-term care ombudsmen for its program.
An ombudsman works with people who use long-term care services to make sure that services are appropriately provided.
The ombudsman can investigate concerns and resolve problems for persons in nursing homes, rest homes and adult care homes, as well as those receiving long-term care services at home.
Ombudsmen receive special training and are certified by the state.
The program is funded by the federal government through the Older Americans Act and by the state of Texas through the Department of Aging. Services provided by the program are free, but donations are accepted.
Trained community volunteers are an integral part of the program. They inform residents of their rights under Texas law and monitor nursing homes for compliance with the Resident's Bill of Rights.
Ombudsmen are trained, supervised and receive continuing education in residents' rights, problem solving, interviewing skills, negotiating and working with the health-care system.
To become a volunteer ombudsman, phone (800) 447- 7169.
