      FFA, a nationally recognized organization, teaches students the importance of community service. Lampasas FFA recently reinforced the lessons while helping a local family in need.

Democrats to watch PBS segment
      Lampasas County Democrats will meet Saturday at 3 p.m. in the conference room of the Lampasas County Office Building to discuss veterans' issues and how cuts have affected veterans' care, said a party spokesman. Guests will watch a segment from NOW on PBS called "Fighting the Army," which discusses the thousands of U.S. troops being discharged from the U.S. Army each year.

Couple plan winter wedding
      Amber Dawn Banister and Robert Wayne Groves, both of Lubbock, plan to exchange wedding vows in a Dec. 20, 2008, ceremony in Lubbock.       B.E. and LaFayne Porter of Bend celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Sept. 11. The couple was honored with a dinner on Sept. 12 by their three children, two grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pidcoke plans 125th anniversary event
      Pidcoke United Methodist Church will celebrate its 125th anniversary on Oct. 26. The church service will begin at 11 a.m., with a catered meal to follow. Displays will include a history of the Pidcoke community and Pidcoke United Methodist Church, a list of pastors throughout the church's history, written remembrances by church members and many photographs.

Bend fish fry, auctions on tap
      Bend Community Center will have its annual fund-raising fish fry on Saturday at 5 p.m. The meal will include fish and all the trimmings. A cake auction and silent auction will be held. All proceeds benefit the community center's upkeep.

CTC lists upcoming non-credit courses
      Central Texas College (CTC) Continuing Education Department is offering the following upcoming non-credit courses. Piano: This group class is for beginners who have little or no piano experience. It focuses on keyboard, improvisation and note reading. Criminal justice scholarship to be offered next spring
      Central Texas College Foundation is the beneficiary of one of its own, as the campus police department donated $5,000 to endow a scholarship designed for criminal justice students. The Central Texas College Police Department Endowed Scholarship will be awarded in the spring 2009 semester to a CTC criminal justice major.

      Preservation Lampasas Inc. will hold its next fund-raising event on Nov. 15 at First United Methodist Church. There will be an exhibition and auction of custom-framed fine art from all over the world, including original oils, watercolors and graphics by internationally known artists and new talents.

Carnley named to honor society
      Pi Sigma Eta held its fall 2008 induction at Dallas Institute of Funeral Service. The honorary funeral service fraternity is represented at the college by the Epsilon Chapter. Admission is based on scholastic standing. Zachary Carnley, a 2002 Lampasas High School graduate, was inducted into the honor society.
