After traveling to Austin and seeing Lake Travis' Garrett Gilbert firsthand on Friday, those on the Badgers' sideline knew they had witnessed something special.

The senior moved into fourth place for the most career touchdowns in Texas high school history and pulled within 189 yards of becoming just the fifth player to pass for more than 10,000 yards in his career.

One student trainer even hunted down the future University of Texas quarterback to ask him to autograph a souvenir miniature football.

Head coach Ryan Bailey couldn't blame the kid.

"It's going to be worth money in a few years," he said.

Gilbert was certainly worth his weight in gold during the Cavaliers' 57-0 shutout of the Badgers, as he completed 18-of-22 passes for 306 yards and five touchdowns.

PHOTOS BY GABE WOLF "That's the best quarterback I've ever seen, and I think a lot of people saw that today," Bailey said.

Lake Travis (7-0, 3-0 district) crossed into the end zone on each of its first eight possessions, posting all its points before the fourth quarter began, including a 22-point outburst in the first quarter and another 21 unanswered points in the second period.

"When you're in a game like this you just want your kids to fight through it and get over it," Bailey said. "They got over the frustration quickly and realized there are still four games left."

In the second half, the Badgers limited Lake Travis to 14 points, but the game was out of hand by then.

After a return into Lampasas territory on the opening kickoff, the Cavaliers needed just three plays to reach the end zone, hitting pay dirt on a 35-yard run by Andy Erickson.

Then Gilbert started working his magic.

The quarterback completed a pass to Cade McCrary for the two-point conversion and after Lampasas punted on the following possession, it took Gilbert just two passes to cover 89 yards. He tossed a 12-yard touchdown strike to McCrary.

After the next Badger punt, Gilbert found Conner Floyd for a touchdown before using his legs to earn the two-point conversion for his squad.

The Badgers' third punt in three possessions resulted in another Lake Travis touchdown, as Gilbert targeted Erickson from 45 yards out.

"That's the state champion right there, and they are better this year than last year by far," Bailey said.

Part of the reason for the Cavaliers' improvement is its ability to run the ball with success.

Lake Travis rushed for 176 yards, with McCrary accounting for 27 of those on a touchdown with 4:30 remaining before halftime.

Approximately two minutes later, the Cavaliers returned to their aerial assault as Gilbert found Chris Aydam for a 19-yard touchdown to give Lake Travis a commanding 43-0 lead at the half.

Gilbert's final touchdown came on an 11-yard pass to McCrary in the third quarter before backup Michael Brewer entered the game.

Brewer ran for a 12-yard score with 2:05 left in the period.

Rush Seaver led Lampasas (0-6, 0-2) defensively. He recorded four solo tackles along with five assists while pressuring the quarterback once. Casey Tucker was responsible for three solos and assisted on another three.

Offensively, the Badgers were led by Astin Murray's 53 yards on twoof three passing. As a team, Lampasas completed five of its 10 passes for 82 yards with a pair of interceptions.

But after the game, the talk centered on Gilbert.

"He's the best high school quarterback I've seen," defensive coordinator Jimmy Randolph said. "He'll be one of the best college guys ever.

"He'll play on Sundays [in the NFL]."

The Badgers return to Lampasas this week for their homecoming game against undefeated Dripping Springs (7-0, 3-0).
