Lady Hornets take fifth at meet

Lometa's cross country team returned to the course Oct. 1 for its home meet hosted at Lometa Regional Park.

The varsity girls' team took fifth place overall behind strong performances from Maria Jaso-Perez (16:58), Jeanette Rosales (17:11) and Patricia Viera (17:55).

Maribel Reyes scored points with a time of 18:21, while Marissa Nichols (20:23) and Hannah Purser (22:31) followed closely behind.

Lucas Kemp paced the varsity boys' squad with a time of 21:21. Edgar Castruita (22:11) and Junior Castruita (24:03) were the only other boys running for the Hornets.

Junior varsity runner John Faulstich finished the course with a time of 22:40.

Esmeralda Jaso, Noalle Skipper, Monica Bridges and Jessica Moore all crossed the finish line behind the junior high girls' leader Laci Moreno, who placed seventh.

George Vasquez led the junior high boys' team with a 10th place finish, narrowly edging out Shane Stone who placed 11th and Bradley Cole (12th). Eric Nichols also ended the race in the top 15, earning 13th overall.

Gunner Bradley and Kyle Waling rounded out the junior high boys' squad.

"We would like to thank the city for letting us use the park," cross country coach Brandy Eckermann said.

"The meet went very well, and it would be impossible for it to happen without all the people who volunteer their time to help.

"We are very grateful to them."
