Runners off to a slow start
The trip from Lometa to Waco typically takes about two hours.
Unfortunately for the Hornets' varsity cross country teams, the trip home must have felt like an eternity.
The Lometa boys' team -- consisting of junior varsity football players who compete, but do not practice -- finished last among the 13 schools competing from Class 1A, 2A and 3A. The much larger 3A Lorena captured first place.
Lucas Kemp had the highest finish for the Hornets with a time of 20:42, earning 55 points for the team. A brief 14 seconds later, Dylan Straley crossed the finish line of the 5K course, followed by Hector Ortiz (22:17) and Junior Castruita (22:56).
Coty Hand also scored points for Lometa, completing the course in 25:14.
With a combined time of 1:52:05, the boys were almost seven minutes behind 12th place Franklin.
The girls had an equally difficult time at the meet, finishing in last place with an average time of 16:11 on the two-mile course.
Maria Jaso was the first Lady Hornet to finish, clocking in with a time of 14:50, while Maribel Reyes (16:01), Patricia Viera (16:15) and Jeanette Rosales (16:24) completed the course within 30 seconds of each other.
Marissa Nicholas also earned points for the team with a time of 17:25.
First-place 3A Cameron Yoe had all five of its runners finish in the top 15.
Lometa's next opportunity to race comes Saturday when it travels to a meet at Vandergriff Park in Arlington.
