Badgers learning as they go
With three weeks remaining until district starts, Lampasas look at Rattlers as a tune-up
      The Badgers might be playing San Marcos tonight, but they will be scouting Hendrickson in the process. Just like when head coach Ryan Bailey scheduled Manor as a preview for the future district game against Killeen, he will use this early-season opponent to simulate a district foe.

      More than 30 years ago, Johnny "Lam" Jones and Johnny "Ham" Jones stood united in an attempt to bring home a national championship to the legions that sported burnt orange and white inside Texas Memorial Stadium. Even Longhorns fans have to admit their cause now is much more important.

Tennis match stopped early due to lightning
      The Lampasas varsity tennis teams were shocked by Dripping Springs on Tuesday, losing 14-2. Things could have been worse, however. The Badgers could have been electrocuted. Matches were called off early due to lightning strikes in the area as a storm rolled through town.

      Junior Brode DuBose wraps up running back Gabe Terrell during Wednesday's practice. The Badgers should expect a primarily run-based offensive attack from the San Marcos Rattlers.

Fellowship and fun
      The Fellowship of Christian Students held its first meeting of the year on Sept. 8 with a turnout of more than 90 students. Weekly meetings will be held in the old high school gym every Thursday morning at 7:15.

Tri-City Express, Lampasas Force soccer teams begin schedules with victories
      The Tri-City Express U-19 girls' team won its season opener last Sunday, easily defeating the TC Awesome Blossoms 5-0. Jacky Lovejoy scored the first goal of the match at the 16-minute mark and then, two minutes later, added another by targeting a 25- yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

      MIDDLE SCHOOL Almost nothing went right for the middle school football teams on Tuesday. The games scheduled to take place in Burnet were canceled due to bad weather, and the referees did not show up for the games taking place in Lampasas.

Hornets named 'Army Strong Team' after win
      The Lometa Hornets received more than just a check in the win column after defeating Zephyr last Friday night. They also got some lofty recognition. Lometa's 44-33 defeat of the second best team in six-man Division II football earned it the title of "Army Strong Team of the Week" from Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

Council hires CPA
      Although scheduled for a holiday, the regular meeting of the Lometa City Council went on as planned Labor Day evening. The council discussed its options for the hiring of a new certified public accountant then OK'd the hiring of Charity Taber of Burnet as its CPA.

Lometa awarded renewable energy grant funds
      According to the office of State Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, the city of Lometa has been awarded a grant for $488,714 for solar panels to supply power to the existing sewer treatment plant. Contractors will install a 50kw solar panel system at the existing wastewater treatment plant to reduce the plant's utility cost up to 50 percent annually.

Trustees to meet Monday
      The Lometa Independent School District Board of Trustees will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the school library for a public hearing on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. A monthly investment report, consideration of budget amendments and monthly bills, and appointing teacher appraisers for 2008-09 also will be discussed.

Runners off to a slow start
      The trip from Lometa to Waco typically takes about two hours. Unfortunately for the Hornets' varsity cross country teams, the trip home must have felt like an eternity. The Lometa boys' team -- consisting of junior varsity football players who compete, but do not practice -- finished last among the 13 schools competing from Class 1A, 2A and 3A.
