Judge hands down probation
      Mari Angelique Salazar, 33, of Lampasas was given five years' deferred adjudication probation for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The sentence was handed down in 27th District Court with Judge Joe Carroll presiding. Ms. Salazar also must pay a $1,000 fine and $640 in restitution.

Can tab drive set
      The Lampasas High School Key Club will conduct a can tab drive from Monday through Oct. 3 to benefit the American Red Cross' Hurricane Relief Fund. Students and community members are encouraged to collect can tabs to be used by the club in this effort.

LMS students, chaperons take annual trip to Washington, D.C., New York
      The annual Washington, D.C. and New York trip by Lampasas Middle School students and chaperons was attended by a large group of students and adults, giving them the opportunity to visit places that many have only read about in history books.

Garden Club selects Yard of Month winner
      Browning Community Garden Club members met recently at the Kempner Brick Oven for a membership drive luncheon. Sharron Van Weelden welcomed new members Shirley Overall, Pam Knutson, Martha Pearse and Gitta Kuhlmann. Regular monthly meetings will resume Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Clear Creek Baptist Church.

Fest booths available
      Vendors and exhibitors are being sought for the 14th annual Herb & Art Festival set Oct. 11 on Courtyard Square. The Lampasas County Chamber of Commercesponsored event will offer a large selection of speakers this year. Booths, at 10x10-feet, are $50 per space. Food booths are $80.

FFA to host annual Fun Day events
      The Lampasas FFA will host the annual San Saba District FFA Fun Day on Saturday from 3-7 p.m. at Hancock Park and the Hostess House. The 2008-09 District FFA officer team is led by Lampasas High School's Sara Jackson, president; and Josh Logsdon, sentinel, Lometa High School.

      Aware Central Texas offers antivictimization education programs on safeguarding families at various locations in Copperas Cove, Killeen and Belton. Instructional topics for pre-kin- dergarten through sixth grade include play it safe on the Internet, tricky people and safety party.

Officials: Drug, alcohol abuse have effect on crime in Texas
      In every state, crime and arrest statistics show the relationship between drug or alcohol abuse and crime. And Texas is no exception. An examination of the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program statistics show that between 50 and 60 percent of adult male arrestees in four Texas cities tested positive for cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, opiates or PCP in 2000.

Rollover sends one to hospital
      A San Antonio man was transported to Rollins Brook Community Hospital Thursday morning after a rollover about 6.5 miles north of Adamsville. Jackie Nichols was traveling south on U.S. Highway 281 in a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo when he drifted off the shoulder into a bar ditch, likely as a result of fatigue, said Patrick Hodgkiss, Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

Groundwater district to meet Wednesday
      The Central Texas Groundwater Conservation District wil meet Wednesday in Goldthwaite to approve the Desired Future Conditions of the Trinity Aquifer. This includes 41 of the 45 counties in the GMA 8 boundary.
