      The sound of money flying out of your wallet at the grocery store is not due to imagination gone amok. According to The Bureau of Labor, the cost of food inflation these days is about 6.7 percent. Adding to the pain is the fact that the supermarket industry has spent millions of dollars on research to learn how to get consumers to spend money.

Wedding set for October
      Eddie and Debby Bowden of Lampasas announce the engagement of their daughter, Maurine Michele, to Carter D. Patterson of Burnet. He is the son of Ronnie and Venona Patterson of Lampasas, and Luanne and Dick Ellis of Burnet. The couple plan an October wedding in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Night Out scheduled
      Local law enforcement officers and public safety officials will host the 25th National Night Out event on Oct. 7 from 6-9 p.m. at the H-E-B parking lot. National Night Out is an opportunity for citizens, law enforcement and other officials to join forces to promote crime-prevention awareness and to send a message that the community is working together to prevent crime.

      High school students nationwide are invited to participate in the 2008-09 "Being an American" Essay Contest, which explores the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Administered by the Bill of Rights Institute, a non-profit educational organization in the Washington, D.C.

LISD offers PSAT testing
      Lampasas Independent School District is participating in the College Board's Early Participation Program this year which allows 10th and 11th graders to take the PSAT at no cost. Students will register during English classes. The test will be $13 for ninth-grade students, who must register by Oct. 10 at the counseling office.

Not typical Easter bunnies
     Area 4-H/FFA adult leader Rod Freeman presented a rabbit workshop recently to two freshman classes enrolled in Dr. Steve Forsythe's Introduction to World Agriculture class. Freeman brought several breeds of meat rabbits to the classroom and discussed feeding and management as well as showmanship.

Republican Party chair speaks to retired teachers
      For the Lampasas County Retired Teachers Association's first meeting of the year at the Lampasas ISD Board Room, Lampasas County Republican Chairman Skipper Wallace spoke on elections. Wallace has been the county Republican chairman for 17 years and has researched elections thoroughly. He explained that there are three parts to elections beginning with the officials.

Adamsville group plans end to celebration
      Adamsville Heritage Association's Christmas Tour on Dec. 6 will end the 100-year celebration. The event is set on the "strip" of Adamsville, U.S. Highway 281, with decorated homes to be included for several miles north and south of the intersection of 281 and FM 581 East.

Farm Bureau convention set Sept. 27
      The Lampasas County Farm Bureau will hold its annual convention on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Building. A barbecue meal will be served. Please bring a dessert or salad. Guest speaker will be Bryce Myric, marketing specialist with Texas Farm Bureau. He will discuss ways to better market beef cattle.

      Preservation Lampasas Inc. will hold its annual fish fry Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Holiday House, 908 E. Fourth St. Cost is $20 per plate per person. Tickets are available at Cattles Pharmacy, Hodges & Sargent Pharmacy, Old Town Antiques and the Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce office on U.S. Highway 281 South.
