Mary Jane Baxter is the August Artist of the Month for the Lampasas Art Club. Mary Jane Baxter is the August Artist of the Month for the Lampasas Art Club. A longtime club member, Mrs. Baxter's multimedia paintings are on display at the front of Lampasas Art Gallery in the foyer of My Girls on East Third Street.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., and moved with her family to Lampasas where she makes her home after many years living on a ranch near Bend.

Her interest in art began in 1969 when she accompanied a friend to art classes and began painting as a hobby. While actively involved in ranching, training horses and sewing for rodeo queens, Mrs. Baxter reared two sons while serving as secretary for the Central Texas Cut- ting Horse Association for 17 years.

She has studied with many teachers of fine arts in the Central Texas area, and her work has been displayed in many area art galleries.

For many years, she had an interior design shop, and a number of her paintings are in public and private collections.

Mrs. Baxter also owned an art design studio where she produced hand-painted clothing and stainedglass pieces, followed by a design, fabric and sewing business where she created clothing and quilted art and taught classes.

Mrs. Baxter still offers knitting classes at the art gallery on Tuesday afternoons. For gallery information, phone 556-9755.
