Lometa school building suffers damage in fire
PHOTO BY BARBARA PHILLIPS The kitchen area of the Lometa ISD's second campus was destroyed by fire Friday, and school trustees met Monday night to discuss the building's future. A fire that started in the kitchen left heavy smoke, fire and water damage Friday afternoon at Lometa Independent School District's accelerated campus.
Lampasas County Fire Marshal Gene Harrison said the fire ignited in the area of the stove where it caught onto cabinets and quickly spread.
The call came to the Lometa Fire Department for the 45x70-foot metal building at 12:41 p.m., and Lometa and Lampasas firefighters responded.
Serious fire damage was sustained throughout the building, and smoke damaged the remainder of the structure, Harrison said.
The fire has been determined to be accidental, and no one was in the building at the time of the blaze.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
In an unrelated matter, a Lometa Volunteer Fire Department truck had its wiring short out on the scene, and firefighters quickly extinguished that.
An emergency meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Lometa Independent School District was held Monday night to discuss the district's plans for the building, and a full report will be in Friday's edition of the Dispatch Record.
