Lightning strike?
      During a rainstorm that skirted Lampasas County last week, lightning seems to have been the culprit that took down a tree in the yard of Wanda Meyers on Ridge Street. Winds were not high enough to have caused the damage, Mrs. Meyers said.

Conaway rep to visit here
      A member of Congressman Mike Conaway's Llano office staff will make a stop in Lampasas Aug. 13 to visit with constituents from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Lampasas County Courthouse. Constituents may share concerns, request help on a federal issue or ask any other question of the staff.

Correction
      A Commissioners Court story in the Aug. 1 edition incorrectly quoted Ute Wallace. Early advertisements for the Lampasas River Place subdivision, rather than Tad Davis, indicated there would be a recreational area with access to the Lampasas River. Davis did not personally make any promises to potential buyers.

Lometa school building suffers damage in fire
      A fire that started in the kitchen left heavy smoke, fire and water damage Friday afternoon at Lometa Independent School District's accelerated campus. Lampasas County Fire Marshal Gene Harrison said the fire ignited in the area of the stove where it caught onto cabinets and quickly spread.

City's museum extends hours
      Keystone Square Museum board members agreed to extend the hours of the museum's operation. In addition to the museum's regular Saturday hours, the facility now will be open to the public most Mondays, from 10 a.m. to noon. Most recently, the museum was open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 pm., and visits by appointment are still available.

Early study reveals promising Alzheimer's disease treatment
      A drug once approved as an antihistamine in Russia improved thinking processes and ability to function in patients with Alzheimer's disease in a study conducted there, said an expert at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. The findings are published in the current issue of the journal, "The Lancet.
