All Stars open play in national tourney
      The 14-and-under M-Pact All- Star Team of Lampasas had a difficult start to pool play in the fast-pitch softball Summer Nationals in Harlingen, losing two of its first three games. The Lampasas team was set to begin bracket play in the doubleelimination tournament yesterday at 3:30 p.m. against the Texas Hurricanes of Alamo. Kinzy Courtney was slated to pitch.

TPWD offers expo
      The 2008 Texas Parks & Wildlife Expo is set on 35 acres at TPW Headquarters in Austin, 4200 Smith School Rd., on Oct. 4-5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Begun in 1992 as a tribute to hunting, fishing and the great outdoors, the Expo will celebrate its 17th anniversary this year.

Referees sought
      The Austin Basketball Officials Association, a non-profit organization, is seeking healthy, active adults to work as referees for area middle school and high school games during the 2008-09 season. Training begins Sept. 15, and the association schedules referees.

      Ropers over 40 years of age from all over Texas converged on Little Bear Ranch last weekend for two days of team roping competition. The 40+ Team Roping Championships out of Wills Point brought its cattle and crew to give local and non-local ropers a chance to win cash and prizes.

      The Texas Deer Association will hold its 10th annual Convention & Trade Show Aug. 21-23 at the Westin La Cantera Resort and Hotel in San Antonio. The convention attracts thousands of deer enthusiasts from around the state.

British soccer camp on tap
      The Boys and Girls Club of Lampasas will play host to a Challenger Sports British soccer camp Monday through Friday at Gavin Garrett Soccer Complex. "First Kicks" camp sessions for three- and fouryear olds will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for $56. A "Mini Soccer" camp is available to four- and five-year-old players from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $76.

      A new tradition will begin this fall when the Greg May Father-Son Tournament tees off Sept. 13-14 in Waco. Professional and amateur teams of father and son, father-in-law/son-in-law, stepfather/stepson or grandfather/grandson are welcome to the 36-hole tournament.
