Lampasas County youths get ready for 2009 stock show season
      Forty-seven steers were validated recently by the Lampasas Steer Validation Committee for upcoming Lampasas, Lometa and major shows set for 2009. Several new exhibitors will begin their showing experience through 4-H and FFA this year.

Buy-in waiver for supplemental ag disaster assistance programs under way in new Farm Bill
      USDA's Farm Service Agency will allow producers who would otherwise be ineligible for the new disaster assistance programs to become eligible by paying a fee as required by the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008.

      The report from the July 16 sale at Lampasas Cattle Auction is as follows. Cattle and calves: Estimated receipts 1,193. Compared to last week at 999 and 873 last year. Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers unevenly steady; slaughter cows $3-$5 lower; slaughter bulls $1-$2 lower. Replacement cows and cow/calf pairs $50 higher. Trade and demand good.

Hog-control program receives TDA funding
      The Texas Department of Agriculture recently awarded Texas AgriLife Extension Service $1 million for the agency's new Texas Feral Hog Control Program: Moving Towards a Long-Term Abatement Strategy. "The feral hog population has exploded in Texas over the past 20 years," said Ag Commissioner Todd Staples.
