Blue Blazes athletes try to build on Lampasas' summer-track tradition at state-qualifier in Temple
      When former Lampasas High School head track coach Gordon Pynes left for Atlanta High School after the 1986 season, the summer track program he spent half a decade growing started to wither. The Blue Blazes stopped carrying their moniker, and the number of athletes who chose to sacrifice precious summ er-vacation time dwindled.

New biking, hiking trail opens at South Shore of Lake Bastrop
      South Shore Park on Lake Bastrop opened its first mountain bike trail in June. The new North-South Trailway is about five miles long and connects South Shore and North Shore parks. Outdoor and mountain-bike aficionados asked for such a trail, and the LCRA Parks department happily obliged.

      Let's see, how can I keep this as simple as possible. OK, here goes: Whether it was privately funded or not, the state wasted $2.5 million with its physical fitness assessment of Texas public schoolchildren from third to 12th grades.

      SOCCER The Lampasas Soccer Association is now taking applications for both boys' (Force) and girls' (Tri- City Express) teams. Players from ages 9 to 18 as of Aug. 1 are eligible.
