PEC warns of fraudulent meter readers

Pedernales Electric is cautioning its members to be on the lookout for scam artists impersonating "meter readers" and demanding money. In one incident, a man wearing an orange shirt improperly identifying him as a meter reader went from door to door in the Kyle area, attempting to coerce residents into giving him money.

PEC does not employ meter readers, as its meters are read electronically. In addition, most Pedernales Electric field staff wear blue uniforms that prominently identify them as company employees, and all carry official company identification. Contractors working for PEC are required to have a letter of authorization from the utility.

If members have questions or doubts about the identity of anyone claiming to be a PEC representative, they can call the company toll-free at (888) 554-4732 or visit any PEC office. Members also are asked to notify law enforcement if they see or are victims of any suspicious activity.
