Capital Ambulance & Transit Service transported a Lampasas man to Rollins Brook Community Hospital for possible injuries Wednesday after a two-vehicle wreck near Regal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Frederick Tolbert of Lampasas, the driver of a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, collided about 9:30 a.m. with a 2001 Mack garbage truck while trying to pass the Waste Management vehicle on the right near the intersection of Farmto Market Road 580 East and Northington Street.

Kenneth Green of Temple, a Waste Management driver, had signaled with his right blinker and was slowing down to turn onto Northington when Tolbert's vehicle hit the garbage truck, Lampasas Police Department patrolman Jeff Dunlap said. The vehicles collided about 20 feet west of the intersection.

Capital Ambulance transported Tolbert for treatment of a possible broken arm. Tolbert also complained of shortness of breath, Dunlap said.

Tolbert had one female passenger, Dunlap said, but her name was not immediately available.

The collision damaged the Silverado from the back left corner to the front of the driver's side and ruptured a 65-gallon fuel tank on the right side of the garbage truck.

City Street Department workers shoveled dirt onto the intersection to cover the diesel spill, which Lampasas Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Adams estimated at 20 gallons.

The Texas Department of Transportation will clean up the dirt and fuel, Dunlap said, since the intersection involves a state road.
